Southern CA has been on high alert as the Johannes Mehserle conviction drew closer. Mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. He was formerly a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer. He was aiding in arrest around New Years in 2009. He allegedly mistook his weapon for his Taser. Oscar Grant was on the ground in cuffs. He had been shot at point blank range. Grant was twenty-two. He perished the next day. Credit was given for time already served. Mehserle had been given only 2 years.
Sentencing Mehserle finally
The Johannes Mehserle hearing left Mehserle with a sentence. In fact, he got 2 yrs with a 292 day credit for time served already. Mehserle had been convicted in July of involuntary manslaughter, and will serve just over 14 months in prison, unless released early, as outlined by ABC7 in San Francisco. Judge Robert Perry dropped the dun enhancement charge. This had been retried later though. Ten years would be added to his sentence with the gun enhancement charge which just states that the firearm was part of the crime. Grant’s mother asked the judge to give Mehserle the maximum sentence of 14 years. As outlined by Judge Perry, there isn't any evidence that Mehserle meant to draw his pistol. He may are going for his taser. Mehserle could possibly be released early. In seven months, this could happen.
Police are supposed to be ready
After Mehserle’s conviction for the Oscar Grant shooting in July, protests broke out in Oakland, as outlined by CNN. Arrests were made by police officers for this. Local companies were being damaged from it. There is a protest planned with a permit issued for Friday November 5 when the expectation by police is that it won't be as bad. The B.A.R.T. Oscar Grant incident is being told as a young African American being murdered by a white California police officer when no African Americans were on the jury.
A lot of tension going around
The trial was initially moved to Los Angeles County as it had been felt that tensions were too high in Alameda County. Numerous of the friends and family of Grant are mad about the sentence. They think that murder is something a police officer is getting away with in the case.
