The cost of America’s “War on Terror” continues to skyrocket, indicates the Associated Press. This time, the Obama administration has committed $2 billion toward Pakistan military aid to fight extremist groups like the Taliban and al-Qaida. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced at a press conference the funds would be distributed from 2012 to 2016 for United States of America arms, ammo and field equipment.
Not supplying each Pakistan military the aid
The proposed Pakistan military aid wouldn’t go to all the Pakistani military units, the AP accounts. This is what the Obama administration wants. Human rights issues are in question with some of the units. They are torturing prisoners and having executions with trial. Furthermore, questions exist as to exactly how dedicated Pakistan’s Islamabad govt is to policing its border with Afghanistan and whether Pakistan has used past United States of America military support funds to buy missiles with which they have targeted rival nation (and United States of America ally) India. Outside Pakistan’s military aid, the nation is already receiving $7.5 billion in civilian assistance to help it deal with recent catastrophic flood damage.
A conference for launching the plan was made by Clinton and Qureshi
Clinton needed to be very careful about what took place at the meeting with herself as Secretary of State and Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Clinton spoke about how the Pakistani individuals have made “sacrifice and service” in order to restore their nation although the United States of America doesn’t like how the Islamabad govt is fairly easy on terrorism.
Responding to allegations of being soft on terrorism, Qureshi said, “We don’t know what greater evidence to offer (as proof to the contrary) than the blood of our people.”
United States motivates Pakistan to improve human rights education<
Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont backed the 1997 legislation that does not all Pakistani units that are expected to have human rights violations to get military support. The “Leahy Amendment” officially “bars United States military services assistance from going to foreign armed forces suspected of committing atrocities,” accounts the AP. There can be negations made with the Pakistan military services support although the negations will take into account the Leahy Amendment. Units that fail to comply with the Leahy Amendment are being encouraged to toe the line.
