What should are a private moment for Rutgers University freshman Clementi regrettably spiraled into suicide after his gay encounter was broadcast live online without his knowledge, reports ABC News. Media reports indicate that fellow Rutgers students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei orchestrated the live online broadcast that ultimately led Clementi into despondency and suicide. Not long following the event, Clementi announced via his Facebook page that he was leaving to jump off the George Washington Bridge, which he evidently did.
A warning of a potential death came from Tyler Clementi
September 22 was when everybody got their farewell from Tyler Clementi on his Facebook. He updated his status to say, "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry," at 8:42 p.m. Clementi’s body has not yet been reported as found, although an unknown male body was discovered by New Jersey authorities in the Hudson River just north of the bridge. Clementi's Rutgers University ID was found in a wallet nearby. There was also his driver's license contained within the wallet.
Clementi was recognized for how great he is with music along with his good personality in a statement the Clementi family attorney, Paul Mainardi put out confirming his death.
Expressing, ‘I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.’
Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan discussed that because Tyler Clementi's gay encounter was broadcasted through iChat, both Rutgers Scarlet Knights Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei are being imposed with 2 counts of invasion of privacy. Ravi even made note of the incident on his Twitter page, where he tweeted on September 19 that:
“Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
Two days after the first broadcast, Ravi tweeted again:
“Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it is happening again.”
Law enforcement take in Wei and Ravi
Ravi and Wei both surrendered to the new Jersey police. Neither remains in police custody anymore though. Because of her recognizance, Wei was able to be discharged from jail, reports ABC News. On the other hand, Dharun Ravi had to pay a $25,000 bail to get out. There could be more news to come.
