Not the first UC tuition hike

An average of $822 boost per academic year can be paid by the students as a result of University of California tuition raise. This latest increase follows a massive 32 percent UC tuition hike that occurred earlier in the year. $180 million revenue boost is expected from this tuition hike. Only a third of that amount goes towards financial aid.

Already this month there was a 15.5 percent increase in tuition approved for California State University systems. Beginning the Fall semester of 2011 the average tuition boost will go from about $4,230 to $4,884.

Students arrested after protests

At the San Francisco UC Board of Regents headquarters, protests erupted over these increases from numerous students just the day before they agreed to the rise. 11 students and 2 others were arrested because the protests got out of hand. Many officers had to use pepper spray to keep the children at bay when one officer actually went as far as drawing his gun. "The increase is unFEElievable" could be heard in unison from the protesters as the board sat inside and finalized their decision.

University of California students receive very little

UC Merced biosciences major Saema Adeeb told the San Francisco Gate that her family earns too much for her to qualify for financial aid, so she might not be able to return to the University of California system. Even the president of UCLA, Jasmine Hill, told the board that students are shoplifting just to eat because they can't afford the schooling price as it is.
