Vermillion oil rig surge hits Gulf of Mexico drilling area

A platform on the Gulf Coast had a problem. This came from a gas rig explosion. Nobody died while one person was injured. There is no cause of blast yet. Near Vermillion Bay is where the oil platform explosion occurred. This is on the Louisiana coast. Mariner Energy owned the platform that is hundreds of miles away from the gas rig that erupted in April owned by British Petroleum. Shallow waters contain the Vermillion rig as opposed to the Gulf Coast gas rig that was in deep water.

Explosion only hurts one

The gas rig surge had reports of only one injured. Only a single person was hurt. First, the drilling rig erupted. As that was happening, 13 individuals went overboard. The Coast Guard, according to the brand new York Times, received more than one report of an oil rig in flames just after 9 a.m. on today. It was about an hour before helicopters and Coast Guard vessels began arriving. The Coast Guard rescued 13 workers. All of them were accounted for. Since the Deepwater gas rig surge killed 11, it is surprising that only a single person was injured.

Waters were shallow

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig was drilling at a far greater depth than Vermillion Oil Rig 380. The Vermillion oil rig sits atop only 340 feet of water, about 100 miles (80 nautical miles) off the Louisiana coast. CNN reports that the gas rig was producing 1,400 barrels of gas per day. Also, 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas was being produced every day. The Coast Guard is intending first to get the fire out. Immediately after the news of the explosion, shares for Mariner Energy dropped by 5 percent.

Many concerned about drilling offshore

The subject of offshore drilling has been a hot topic for years. It looks really dangerous and has too many risks to the environment every time an oil rig explodes. Bp is one of few companies to step up and take responsibility for its oil spill. Most companies do not meaning working class end up paying for fix it all.
