The last few years have seen an explosion of zombie related media, dubbed zombie lit. After some very successful zombie films like 28 Days Later and the remake of Dawn of the Dead, some authors were quick to capitalize on the popularity of the zombie genre. One of probably the most popular zombie lit novels were the World War Z books, alongside Quirk Books’ Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Brad Pitt was most recently confirmed to star in World War Z. The coming zombie apocalypse
The precursor to World War Z was a novel called The Zombie Survival Guide, released in 2003. The book is a fictional how to on dealing with the threat of zombies. World War Z came out in 2006, a follow up to that book, which is a collection of interviews with zombie apocalypse survivors. Max Brooks is the author of both novels, the son of Mel Brooks and previous SNL writer. The book was optioned for a film in 2007, and it has been in development for awhile.
This might actually be really good
According to MTV, it was announced at Comic-Con in San Diego that Brad Pitt has been confirmed to star. Paramount has also optioned other works by Max Brooks to be filmed. The director of the Bond film Quantum of Solace, Marc Forster, is attached to direct but that might change. The zombie genre may be on the way out, as fewer zombie features appear to be getting made.
Not the only zombie film in the works
Along with World War Z, the smash success Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has also been optioned for filming. Natalie Portman will star within the hodgepodge of Jane Austen with ninjas and zombies rampant in the English countryside. The number of zombie films has toned down in lieu of melodramatic and insipid vampires and werewolves, but World War Z is apparently set to be epic.
