N-word problem means Dr. Laura quits

Radio industry veteran Dr. Laura Schlessinger should have known that peppering a black caller with 11 instances of the “N-word” would make no profound point about language. Dr. Laura is now part of history. Apparently it is too much considering all the “Dr. Laura quits” headlines around. Dr. Laura will quit the radio show after the contract expires, says PopEater. Because she “wants to regain her First Amendment rights,” is why this radio diva told CNN’s “Larry King Live” that she’s quitting. Schlessinger did once believe that Howard Stern needed those rights taken away from him.

Dr. Laura thinks this is really an empowering move on her part.

“I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry – some special interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates and sponsors,” she told King.

Apology not accepted by Schlessinger

While the good doctor apologized for using the N-word, she maintains that she “wasn’t dissing anybody.”. Dr. Laura’s production company says they’re letting her “pursue opportunities” outside of their company. Also, General Motors and Motel 6 have pulled their sponsorship for Schlessinger.

TMZ reports that Dr. Laura has played the quitter card before. She almost had her own CBS TV talk show in 1999. She said she would only take the job if Howard Stern would get a “muzzle” so he could no longer talk bad about her. CBS balked at her condition, understandably. After that happened, Paramount took on Dr. Laura for a TV show momentarily. One episode featured a conversation on homosexuals and the way she didn’t like them, which made gay rights groups really angry. A campaign began at StopDrLaura.com which made it so 170 advertisers left the show completely. Dr. Laura even lost Dodge.
