Honda recalls Accords, Civics and Elements over old problem

Old troubles with Civics, Elements and Accords spark a Honda recall

A shift interlock problem has led to 1.4 million Honda cars being recalled – and yet one more 2010 Honda recall. Today, a new Honda recall was announced for the exact same problem. This recall covers some 2003 and 2004 Honda Elements, 2003 Accords, and 2003 Civics. Article source – Honda recalls Accords, Civics and Elements over old problem by Car Deal Expert.

The 2010 Honda recall depending on shift interlock

The shift interlock system is the basis of this 2010 Honda recall. This is the system that prevents the key being removed without the shifter in park. This could allow the automobile to roll away and cause accidents. 17 separate accidents are attributed to this malfunction. Most often, the problem happens when the vehicle is parked and the key removed, despite the fact that the shifter has not fully engaged the “park” setting. Accidents could be caused when the automobiles left like this roll away.

2010 Honda recall because of NHTSA investigation

The shift interlock problem caused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open an investigation into Honda. In late 2009, the NHTSA upgraded their investigation from “recall query” to “engineering analysis” – a more serious rating. The NHTSA is also evaluating the “timeliness” of Honda recalls. There are possible civil fines for Honda within the works if they are found to have not responded to recall-worthy problems “promptly, truthfully, and completely”. Air bag deployment problems in 2009 led to an additional investigation by the NHTSA.
