Did you know a giant crack in Africa will create a new ocean? Oh and did you know that California is going to have an earthquake that is going to break off California and it's going to fall into the ocean. That's why they say Arizona will become ocean front property?
Seriously though, this giant crack is a 35 mile crack, 20 feet wide in spots, in Ethiopia that will eventually become a new ocean according to researchers. This crack only opened in 2005 yet it is already that big! Kind of thought provoking, isn't it?
It turns out that there is a rift activity that is going on that is the same thing that goes on when oceans are formed and the same kind of activity that is now also parting the red sea. Back in 2005, when the rift was formed, it only took a few days to tear open the 35 mile crack.
Typically this rifting that goes on in the ocean cracks at approximately 1 inch per year. Typically it would take thousands of years for an ocean to form, but if this crack formed 35 miles in just a few days, it's unclear how quickly this new ocean, that would connect the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, between Yemen and Somalia, would form.
